This slim volume attempts to capture the journey of artist Peter Reitsma as he tunneled his way through the end of the last century into the present. This journey has been marked by a subtle change in the years he worked as a graphic artist. His original calling as artist was forgotten in the press to earn a living. In effect his imagination became captive to commercial production.
Experiencing an artist's life on this planet in the first part of this millennium is a challenge. The market culture wants to invade minds and hold souls captive. The artist becomes complicit in that process. The corporate empire has branded itself on our minds with a surfeit of products and we live in an airtight bubble far removed from the voice of those living in the land because of the need for corporate profit.
The graphic artist, who must of necessity make a living can easily find himself captivated by the complex deadline driven workings of the branding industry. In effect, though he may chaff at the cultural blindness to life on this planet, his imagination has been locked away.
The images in this book form a story of tunneling to redemption, the restoration of memory and the proper use of imagination as a God given vocation. The pictorial account is by turns whimsical and brutal as it pictures unheard voices or reads injustice.
